about.
This project was built to help users explore complex connections in a more organic, intuitive way. Surfacing relationships that might otherwise go unnoticed. The design intentionally avoided rigid hierarchies, allowing information to emerge naturally as users navigated the system.
We used KeyLines, a JavaScript data visualization library, as the technical foundation for the app. From there, we layered in thoughtful UX and accessibility improvements. During early evaluation, we identified that the existing system relied heavily on color-coded rings, which posed challenges for colorblind users. In response, we introduced iconography alongside color, and built in secondary color support for additional clarity.
Accessibility was a key pillar throughout. We conducted contrast ratio checks to ensure legibility across the board, and developed both light and dark modes to support a range of user preferences and environments.
the challenge.
One of the biggest challenges was managing multiple, inconsistent data sources. Information was scattered, messy, and not always reliable and we had to design with that uncertainty in mind.
Instead of locking into static layouts, we approached the interface with flexibility and fluidity. Anticipating that nodes and data points might shift, grow, or change over time. This meant building a structure that could adapt gracefully as new insights came in.
We worked closely with stakeholders to understand which data sources were gaining confidence, and only integrated them into the final design once they reached a level of trustworthiness. This allowed us to build a product that remained useful and usable, even as the inputs continued to evolve.
results.
We took an iterative approach to the design process. We rolled out incremental changes like refined colors, new iconography, typography updates, and small usability tweaks one at a time. This helped reduce disruption and allowed us to test improvements in real-time.
Both light and dark modes were launched, supporting diverse viewing preferences and improving usability in different environments.
The product was built on top of a scalable design system, making it easier for future designers and developers to jump in, maintain consistency, and continue evolving the experience without starting from scratch.
Ultimately, we delivered a flexible, accessible, and future-ready tool for exploring complex relationships designed with adaptability at its core.
