about.

I joined a nonprofit organization to redesign a ride-share app that helps people get to and from their reproductive health and essential care appointments.

My main focus was to rework the user flow to make it more intuitive for our volunteer base. At the same time, I was tasked with designing the app in a modular, theme-able way so that it could be easily adapted by partner organizations in other states. This meant building a flexible visual system that could support different logos, brand colors, and localized needs.

I wanted to guide the redesign based on real-time feedback so I conducted user interviews with our volunteers to uncover friction points in the existing app and better understand where improvements were most needed.

the challenge.

There were a few key design and technical hurdles we had to navigate throughout the project:

  • Dual user flows: The app supported two distinct volunteer roles: Dispatch Volunteers and Driver Volunteers which each had different responsibilities and workflows. Balancing clarity and simplicity while supporting both user types was a core challenge.

  • Scalable theming: We needed to create a visual system that could be quickly customized so the same codebase could be reused by other reproductive health organizations in different states, each with their own branding.

  • Feature flexibility: We also had to account for features that some partner organizations needed, even if we didn’t use them yet; so the design system had to be adaptable enough to accommodate future expansion.

  • Fast-paced iteration: We worked in weekly sprints and had to stay responsive to shifting reproductive laws, which meant regular pivots and quick turnarounds were the norm.

results.

The redesign resulted in a much clearer and more streamlined user experience for volunteers, with an interface that made it easier to find the information they needed at a glance.

  • We launched a refreshed UI with a flexible design system that supports easy theming and customization for partner orgs, allowing quick rollouts in other states without rebuilding the app from scratch.

  • The improved structure also created a stronger foundation for future growth, making it easier to integrate new features and respond to evolving needs on both the user and organizational side.

Overall, the project helped us scale impact beyond our initial community, by giving other nonprofits a ready-to-go tool they could tailor to their own service areas.
